audiartВ самом конце нашего отпуска, уже по дороге в аэропорт мы заехали в потрясающее место: мегалитическое кладбище Кэрроумор.
Там на относительно небольшой площади собрано с полсотни могильных памятников, датируемых 6-4 тыс. лет до н.э., то есть они возникли гораздо раньше, чем в Ирландию пришли кельты. Памятники там самых разных типов.
Каменные круги, целые и не очень:

И, наконец, огромный курган:
Курган прекрасен еще и тем, что внутрь него можно зайти и посмотреть, как выглядит курган в разрезе. Оказывается, вся эта куча поверх насыпалась поверх могильного сооружения. То есть, его сначала строили, а потом закапывали:
Где-то там есть еще passage tomb, но до нее мы не дошли.
В целом это всё неуловимо напоминает толкиновские Упокоища:
'Splendid!' said Frodo.‘If we make as good going this afternoon as we have done this morning, we shall have left the Downs before the Sun sets and be jogging on in search of a camping place.' But even as he spoke heturned his glance eastwards, and he saw that on that side the hills were higher and looked down upon them; and all those hills were crowned with green mounds, and on some were standing stones, pointing upwards like jagged teeth out of green gums.
А еще из Кэрроумор открывается потрясающий вид на Нокнарей и доисторический курган, где, как я уже писала, по преданию похоронена кельтская королева Медб.
It is said that the mounds of Tyrn Gorthad, as the Barrowdowns were called of old, are very ancient, and that many were built in the days of the old world of the First Age by the forefathers of the Edain, before they crossed the Blue Mountains into Beleriand, of which Lindon is all that now remains. Those hills were therefore revered by the Dúnedain after their return; and there many of their lords and Kings were buried...
